Most are hands-on, so that you can practise using popular tools, such as the various Google tools, MailChimp and WordPress. They also allow you to meet others in similar positions to yourself and learn from their experiences.

Our aim is to provide good advice and support to help you grow your business. All of us involved in the Small Business Clinic have years of experience in business, so we can provide you with real-life lessons and tips on what to avoid, as well as how to do things right.

Making your website work for your business.

A website is key to most businesses. With the knowledge gained through these workshops you will be able to create your own website.  Alternatively, if you would rather someone else creates it for you, you will be able to specify exactly what you need.

This workshop is aimed at making sure your website can be found by your customers, after all there is no point having the perfect website if no one can find it!

In the first part we explain Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and show you techniques to improve the performance of your website in search engines.

In the second, we take you on a tour of Google Analytics - software you can use to analyse how people actually use your website (as opposed to how you thought they would). We show you how you can use the information there to improve your visitor’s experience of your website as well as getting them doing what you want.

Armed with these tools you can make sure that start making your website stand out in the search results to improve your marketing and hence sales.

WordPress is a very popular and powerful tool for creating websites. It is designed for ordinary people to use, as opposed to geeks and techies, and so suits small businesses well.

This pair of workshops takes you through how to use WordPress and how to create a great website.

In the first workshop we teach you how to use WordPress to create your website: what all the terms mean, how to edit pages and posts, adding pictures and how to create a menu.

In the second we go deeper into website design with WordPress – using themes and plugins – to help you create a website that has the right functionality and looks good too.

What you say and how you say it colours how people think about your business. You need to make sure that you create the right impression. This is particularly true of your digital marketing: your website and social media.  If the words are wrong then you may lose potential customers even if the images are just right.

In this workshop you learn how to:

  • Create the right impression of your business by using about the correct type of language for the situation
  • Write engaging content for your website
  • Write memorable tweets and posts
  • Improve your SEO by targeting your content correctly

Digital Marketing and Social Media

This is an important area for business and is so large, it is difficult to learn all of it on your own. Our courses are aimed at people who want practical help to get started with the most popular tools in this area.

Email marketing keeps you in touch with your customers but we all know how many emails we receive and simply throw away. You need to stand out from the crowd and make an impact if your audience is going to pay attention.

MailChimp is a good tool for email marketing and for any emails to customers or members. You can use it to design eye-catching emails. It also provides facilities for managing the emails and monitoring the effectiveness of your marketing.

We run two practical workshops for people new to MailChimp or those who want to know how to use it effectively for their business. In the first, we concentrate on making sure that you set MailChimp up correctly, as getting it wrong can reduce its effectiveness markedly. We cover GDPR and the basic set up and use of MailChimp. We explain how you can use groups and segments to ensure that your emails are targeted to the people you need to reach rather than creating junk mail in everyone else’s inbox.

The second workshop runs about three weeks after the first, so you have time to practise and come up with all the awkward questions to which you need answers. In this workshop, we extend your knowledge of MailChimp to cover:

  • groups/segments/tags - so you can produce targeted emails
  • templates - to brand your emails
  • reports - to monitor the effectiveness of the emails.

There are many different social media applications available, but which one will work best for your business?

We take you on a whistle-stop tour of the most popular applications, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.  We show you how each can work to the advantage of your business.

In the second half, we discuss the best ways to use the different tools and how to build them into your marketing strategy.

Google provides a hugely popular advertising space, but you need to know how the system works to use it effectively. This workshop covers the mechanics of setting up Google campaigns in both Ads and Shopping and guidance on how to make them successful.
