Learn practical skills for your business

Hands-on workshops covering IT applications and other skills needed in a business, charity or organisation

These workshops cover a wide range of subjects and provide practical advice and support on areas such as digital marketing, social media and websites. Most are hands-on, so that you can practise using popular tools, such as the various Google tools, MailChimp and WordPress. They also allow you to meet others in similar positions to yourself and learn from their experiences.

Our aim is to provide good advice and support to help you grow your business. All of us involved in the Small Business Clinic have years of experience in business, so we can provide you with real-life lessons and tips on what to avoid, as well as how to do things right.

Workshop format - in person and virtual

Under normal circumstances, the workshops last half-day and take place at Bloom.Space in Malvern. There are no more than 8 attendees at any workshop so that there is plenty of scope for discussion and addressing problems specific to your business.

Since the COVID-19 restrictions we have swapped to running virtual workshops. They retain the same interactive and informative format with no more than 8 attendees. The main change is to reduce the length (and the price) to no more than one and a half hours, as it is difficult to stare at a screen for longer than that.  As a result, some of the subjects have been split into more than one workshop so that the pace of the workshop remains reasonable.

WordPress is a very popular and powerful tool for creating websites. It is designed for ordinary people to use, as opposed to geeks and techies, and so suits small businesses well.

This pair of workshops takes you through how to use WordPress and how to create a great website.

In the first workshop we teach you how to use WordPress to create your website: what all the terms mean, how to edit pages and posts, adding pictures and how to create a menu.

In the second we go deeper into website design with WordPress – using themes and plugins – to help you create a website that has the right functionality and looks good too.

Digital Marketing and Social Media

This is an important area for business and is so large, it is difficult to learn all of it on your own. Our courses are aimed at people who want practical help to get started with the most popular tools in this area.

Email marketing keeps you in touch with your customers but we all know how many emails we receive and simply throw away. You need to stand out from the crowd and make an impact if your audience is going to pay attention.

MailChimp is a good tool for email marketing and for any emails to customers or members. You can use it to design eye-catching emails. It also provides facilities for managing the emails and monitoring the effectiveness of your marketing.

We run two practical workshops for people new to MailChimp or those who want to know how to use it effectively for their business. In the first, we concentrate on making sure that you set MailChimp up correctly, as getting it wrong can reduce its effectiveness markedly. We cover GDPR and the basic set up and use of MailChimp. We explain how you can use groups and segments to ensure that your emails are targeted to the people you need to reach rather than creating junk mail in everyone else’s inbox.

The second workshop runs about three weeks after the first, so you have time to practise and come up with all the awkward questions to which you need answers. In this workshop, we extend your knowledge of MailChimp to cover:

  • groups/segments/tags - so you can produce targeted emails
  • templates - to brand your emails
  • reports - to monitor the effectiveness of the emails.

There are many different social media applications available, but which one will work best for your business?

We take you on a whistle-stop tour of the most popular applications, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.  We show you how each can work to the advantage of your business.

In the second half, we discuss the best ways to use the different tools and how to build them into your marketing strategy.

Google provides a hugely popular advertising space, but you need to know how the system works to use it effectively. This workshop covers the mechanics of setting up Google campaigns in both Ads and Shopping and guidance on how to make them successful.

Video is a must to promote your business in a visual world where attention spans are short. If you want to learn more about using video as an effective marketing tool for your business then come along!

This workshop is a joint venture between Small Biz Digital Media and ourselves.

Instagram is a great tool to promote your business. This workshop helps you understand how to use it successfully. We cover getting yourself noticed and then go onto talk about the practicalities of hashtags, stories and much more.

Ecommerce and online shops

More and more people are shopping online, so you need to make sure that you can sell your products and services this way. Our courses are aimed at people who want practical help to set up their online shop and make sure their products perform well in search engines.

More and more consumers are using the internet for shopping rather than visiting the high street or out of town shopping centre. This means that businesses must look to sell online. In this workshop we show you how to set up your shop in a way that attracts your customers to visit and then buy. We will show you how to set up and organise products to enhance the customer experience and then talk about how to manage the checkout and delivery processes.

WooCommerce has the flexibility to sell anything and is the top option for an online shop if you have a WordPress website.

It comes with a huge number of options and addons and can be daunting to set up. In this interactive workshop you will learn how to make WooCommerce to work for your business.
